Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Madam Otiko Afisa Djaba has cautioned Ghanaians to stop giving money to children and physically challenged persons who beg who for arms on the streets.
According to the Minister, her Ministry is determined to get these children and physically challenged persons off the streets explaining that "if we continue to give them arms it will serve as incentives for them to return to the streets."
"Don't give them money. Some of these physically challenged persons you see on the streets begging have cars, they have taxis, they have kiosk but they see begging as profession that is why they are doing it," she warned.
Speaking to Oman FM, Madam Otiko Afisa Djaba said her Ministry is collaborating with the security agencies and will soon go after all the children and physically challenged persons who are begging on the streets.
She said her Ministry has plans to empower the less privileged in society by given them skills training and start up support and would therefore not countenance on what she described as undignified state of streets beggars.
“We recently launched OPERATION GET OFF THE STREET NOW project and pour aimed is aimed is to get these children, physically challenged persons and head porters popularly known as "Kayayei" from the streets and give them skills training and support those who can continue their education so that they become self dependent in the future instead of depending on arms for a living.
"We want these people to have dignity. The fact that you are physically challenged doesn't mean that you are incapable. After all we have physically challenged persons who are teachers, Regional Minister and so forth,” Madam Otiko Afisa Djaba stressed.
