Chief Dele Momodou, a close pal of former President John Dramani Mahama has ascribed his defeat at the 2016 polls to the corruption tag by Ghanaians especially the then opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The businessman and publisher of Ovation Magazine said being accused of corruption is the fastest way to be voted out of power on the continent indicating that the defeat of John Dramani Mahama is not peculiar.

“The easiest way to get rid of a government is to accuse it of corruption and most people that is what they want to hear.

Whether it is true or not people just want[ed] to hear. And it is in the character of politics that you must damage your opponent and damage him beyond repair.” He disclosed on Starr Chat with Bolay Ray.

According to him, the defeat of the former President at the polls was inevitable considering the happenings at the time drawing a linkage between his administration and that of Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria.

“There were a lot of similarities to [Goodluck] Jonathan in Nigeria,” he disclosed adding that the former president was busying himself with projects to better the lives of the citizenry to the neglect of campaigns that would have secured him another term in office.

“He was too busy concentrating on his project. That was one problem. The second one was that Mahama could not really be bothered about what people said about him. That’s why he used to say ‘I’m a dead goat.’ He couldn’t be bothered. He was not afraid.”

Despite the defeat, he said he is proud of the former President for gracefully handing over power to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) noting that it is a mark of good statesmanship.
