Reckless decisions of some appointees is giving us needless headache- Sammi Awuku

The National Youth Organiser of the ruling New Patriotic Party Sammi Awutu has warned Ministers and Appointees of the government to be mindful of the implications of their decisions and desist from actions which could generate bad press for the government.

He explained that some of the decisions which have been taken so far by some of the appointees are given the leadership of the party needless headache, hence the need for them to be mindful.

"Some of the things give us needless headache as party leaders," Mr Awuku stated.

Speaking on Oman FM's political analysis programme “Boiling Point” during a discussion on the decision by GBC to use the law court to prosecute TV owners who fail to pay TV license fees, Mr. Awuku wondered why such an action that targets the poor would be taken when property owners are not even being chased to pay their property rate.

He argued that government could generate more revenue from property rates which the appointees have not paid much attention to instead of the TV license fees.

"How much can you generate from TV license? You can raise more revenue from property rate than TV license," he pointed out.

Sammi Awutu also criticized the Driver & Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) for the mandatory First Aid Kits which had to be withdrawn following the public backlash.

He could not fathom why DVLA decided to introduce the policy when it is only the Motor Transport and Traffic Department of the Ghana Police Service which has the powers to do so.

Sammi Awutu who is seeking to be elected as the National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party urged the Appointees and Ministers to ensure that there is wider consultation on any policy they wants to introduce before implementing it in order not to court the anger of Ghanaians.

"I beg you the Appointees and Ministers ....You should be very careful. Whatever policy you want to introduce test the grounds, build consensus first. We shouldn't give Ghanaians the opportunity to lambast this government," he warned.

He pointed out that the 2016 presidential election was won by the NPP as a result of hard work and not on a silver platter stressing that “we need to jealously guard this victory”.

According to him, some supporters of the party even slept in mosquitoes infested classrooms and other uncomfortable places just to campaign for the party to come to power.
