PURC to investigate ECG’s IT infrastructure

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) says it intends to undertake a comprehensive independent investigation into the IT infrastructure of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to ascertain the root cause of the system failure to inform further regulatory actions.

This action comes on the back of recent challenges with pre-paid patronage in some parts of Accra.

The PURC is assuring consumers of its commitment to solve ongoing challenges with ECG credit top-up, and has promised to see to it that the issue is resolved.

Electricity consumers in Achimota, Korle-Bu, Dansoman and Kaneshie districts have been unable to purchase ECG credits for the past four days.

Hundreds of consumers stormed the offices of the ECG at Avenor Thursday morning in an attempt to get their issues resolved.

On Wednesday, the offices were stormed by customers amid commotion over the inability to load their meters.

The PURC says it has commenced investigations involving site visits of the affected communities to ascertain the root cause of the problem.

In a statement issued by the PURC, it says the Electricity Company of Ghana has been ordered to augment its help desk in all affected district offices to deal with the large number of consumers, and keep them informed on progress made in resolving the issue.

The Commission has also issued a time-bound directive to ECG to submit details of emergency response measures to be carried out.
