Minister for Education Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has lashed out her predecessor Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang saying she was an embarrassment to the education sector.

In his view, the former minister did not understand the essence of education despite being a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast hence her complete failure in the sector.

Speaking on Asempa FM's Ekosii Sen Programme on Tuesday, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh expressed disappointment in his predecessor for not prioritizing education during her tenure.

According to him, all the things that happened in the sector under the Mahama administration clearly showed that the minister did not have education at the heart.

He said the educationist who was supposed to know better rather left huge debts which virtually collapsed the sector.

He mentioned GHS 30million an outstanding amount for 120,000 students under progressive free SHS, GHS 3.8million for School Uniform arrears, GHS 13million Exercise books, arrears for chalk GHS 10million, arrears for purchase of core text books GHS 26million, 4.7 million feeding grant for special schools, 36 million subsidies for Senior High School (SHS), 155 million Northern scholarship as some of the legacies Prof. Opoku Agyemang left behind.

He also disclosed that there were no documents supporting the supposed 200 schools the erstwhile Mahama administration promised to build.

In spite of this, the Education Minister said they have been able to pay off some of the arrears to get the schools running.

He said they have been able to pay capital grant and school subsidies due to the prudent measures put in place by government.

The Education Minister bemoaned how the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is bent on painting the government black when they left such a mess in government.

He assured of government preparedness to ensure the infrastructural challenges facing the education sector.
