The Petroleum Ladies Association(PELA) of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation(GNPC) have embarked on a breast cancer awareness campaign in Tema with a call on government not to lose sight of the problems associated with the dreadful disease.
The association urged the government to ensure that free breast cancer centres are established in most of the hospitals to provide services to women to prevent them from getting the disease.
Speaking in an interview with Oman FM, after a float through the streets of Tema, President of the Petroleum Ladies Association Madam Doe Agbolosoo Mensah suggested that one of the things that government could also do for women suffering from breast cancer is bearing half of the cost of treating the disease.
This, she explained, will prevent the situation where some cancer patients refuse to seek treatment at the hospital because of the cost involve and end up worsening their condition.
“We want government to include the treatment of breast as one of the diseases covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme.
If government will bear half of the cost it will be ideal because breast cancer treatment is very expensive,” Madam Agbolosoo Mensah suggested.
She also called on the corporate bodies to devote resources to support the fight against breast cancer in the country.
“I will tell corporate bodies to also focus their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects on health and not always on entertainment because the health of a nation is wealth.
Because if your employees are sick and they cannot work productivity will definitely decrease,” she said.
About 500 women were also screened from breast cancer after the float
