The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) leader in -charge of Youth Affairs Felix Mantey has called on parliament to pass a legislation to back the country's quest to promote locally made goods.

According to him, it is not enough for government to ask Ghanaians to patronize made in Ghana goods without taking steps to pass a legislation to make it binding on them.

"If our legal regime is not helping us a country in terms of our quest to promote locally made goods then Parliament should as a matter of urgency pass a legislation to make it biding for Ghanaians, especially state institutions to patronize locally made goods," he said.

Speaking on Oman FM's National Agenda on Tuesday, Felix Mantey said the legislation will discourage Ghanaians from their insatiable taste for foreign goods stressing that the economy will grow if we patronize made in Ghana products.

Felix Mantey noted that certain actions by few Ghanaians in the past contributed to stifle the growth of the local industries.

"We all know that salt that is produced from Ada is good... But what did we see? We allowed somebody who claimed to be a nutritionist from nowhere to wage a campaign that eating of Iodated salt will prevent one from getting goitre and Ghanaians stop eating the local salt and went for iodated salt.”

“Again we have Ghanaians who are into furniture production but when Parliament wanted to procure furniture they went to purchase Chinese furniture. This was bad,” he said.

He also urged government to create the enabling environment for the local industries to thrive by given them financial and technical support.
