National Service farms record bumper harvest

A total of 1,000 bags of maize have been harvested from the National Service Scheme farms at Dawhenya in the Greater Accra Region, with an anticipation to harvest 15,000 bags across all its farms in the country.

This was revealed by the acting Executive Director of the Scheme, Mustapha Ussif, announced this when he visited the Dahwenya farms on Tuesday.

It was to support and supervise personnel in harvesting the 250-acre maize farm.

Harvesting is ongoing on the 600-acre land at Ejura in the Ashanti Region, 150-acre farm at Yeziesi, Tatala and 60-acre farm in Damongo, all in the Northern Region, and 150-acre farm at Brenam in the Brong Ahafo Region.

“Close to 1000 bags have been packed and we are looking forward to hit 15,000 bags after harvesting on all our farms,” he said.

He said though the Scheme this year concentrated on maize and poultry, they hope to go into other cereals and animal husbandry in the next year.

Ussif used the occasion to thank government the GH¢25 million budgetary support for their entrepreneurial programmes including the Youth in Agriculture.

“The Scheme has so far posted over 5,000 personnel to support the agriculture sector. Some of these personnel were posted to support Planting for Food and Jobs, the Scheme’s farms, private and state owned farms,” he added.

He was joined to the farm by the Scheme’s Deputy Director in charge of Finance and Administration, Madam Gifty Oware-Aboagye and Director of Project, Madam Dorinda Agar.
