ECG takes steps to address system losses

The Electricity Company of Ghana is pursuing an aggressive policy to address system losses in the company's operations.
The company believes the measures which had been put in place so far will yield positive results by reducing the amount of power being lost in the distribution chain.
ECG in 2014 recorded 24.17 % as system losses but managed to reduce it to 22.21% in 2015.
However, the 22.21% recorded in 2015 went up to 23.74% in 2016.
Speaking to Oman News at a media workshop organized by the Ministry of Energy, the Acting Director of Engineering at ECG Ing Kwadwo Ayensu Obeng explained that his outfit has made an arrangement with the judiciary to ensure speedy trial of those who will be arrested and brought the courts for engaging in illegal connection.
He added that ECG has also instituted rewards scheme to reward those who will be courageous to report those engaging in illegal connection.
“Through technology we have also installed new meters on our transformers. We have introduced new meters that is possible to detect anytime a consumer tampers with it and there is also what we call Electro Meter Reading (EMI). With that we can sit at our office and know if you tamper with the meter,” he further said.
