Boakye Agyarko, Minister for Energy

The Minister for Energy, Boakye Agyarko, has charged the newly constituted Board of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to provide the right leadership as well as the needed incentives and innovations to improve the general performance of the company.

The innovations, he said, should be able to increase revenue collection and reduction in system losses.

"ECG has been challenged on numerous fronts including, deficiencies in corporate governance, management, operations and finance. I am confident that the new Board will navigate ECG onto the path of financial and operational turnaround in the shortest possible time," he said.

Mr. Boakye Agyarko made the call when he inaugurated an eight -member board of ECG chaired by Mr. Kelli Gadzekpo, CEO of Enterprise Group.

Ghana has obtained a grant of $498.2 million from the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), a United States Government foreign aid agency for disbursement for five years.

The grant, which is under the Ghana Power Compact, will allow private sector participation in the management of ECG, under a concession arrangement for a period of 20 years.

Touching on the concession arrangement, Mr. Boakye Agyarko charged the new board to address all outstanding labour and allied related issues, as well as support management to implement a comprehensive change management programme that would align staff to the new reality, in order to achieve a smooth transition.

"ECG ought to be adequately fixed and sufficiently prepared by the time the concession kicks off, in order for the nation to derive maximum benefit from the transaction," he said.

Other members of the board are; Ing. Mrs. Carlien Dorcas Bou-Chedid, Ing. Samuel Boakye Appiah, Madam Maata Opare, Alhaji Ahmadu Kaleem, Hon. Matthew Nyindam, John Kojo Akorful and Mr. Odeneho Kweku Appiah.
