The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) has called for a reform in Ghana’s constitution to ensure that Inspector General of Police (IGP) is independent from political control.

According to CODEO, the police service is unable to deal with political vigilante groups in the country because the IGP may be controlled politically.

They therefore want reforms to allow the IGP to be appointed for a fixed term in order to effectively deal with political vigilante groups.

Speaking during a round table discussion with media practitioners in the Brong Ahafo Region Mr. Nicholas Akyire, who is the Advisory Board Member of CODEO, said the existence of political vigilante groups is illegal and urged the Ghana Police Service to disband these groups immediately since they pose threats to the national security.

“Since the leader of the police administration is appointed by the political parties they sometimes seem like a toothless dog in fighting this menace "he said".

He noted that these groups are affiliated to the two major political parties, the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Mr. Akyire called on the media to support advocacy to end the menace of political party vigilantism making it the centre of public discussions.

Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) is on a nationwide campaign against political vigilantism which is gaining notoriety in Ghana.

Mr. Akyire indicated that CODEO decided to start the nationwide programme with Brong Ahafo region because it was the centre of political vigilantism.
