Pressure group Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) is calling for presidential commission of inquiry into the allegations of financial malfeasance at the country's electoral management body EC.
Their calls follow allegations and counter allegations of wrongdoing by the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission Mrs. Charlotte Osei and her two deputies.
It all started when some aggrieved staff of the EC petitioned President Akufo-Addo to remove the chairperson on the basis that the chairperson of the commission was engaging in fraudulent transactions and stated misconduct.
The EC chairperson Charlotte Osei in her response, rather hinted, some persons at the Commission could be the brain behind the plot to have her impeached.
She accused the Deputy Commissioner in charge of Operations, Amadu Sulley for bagging some ¢6 million from political parties without the knowledge of the finance department of the Commission while alleging that, her deputy in charge of Corporate Resources, Georgina Opoku Amankwah illegally signed contracts worth GHS40m.
However, both Commissioners, have separately denied the accusations by Charlotte Osei.
Speaking to the issue, President of Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) Dr. Nana Afriyie Ayew hinted that his outfit will send a formal petition to the President by close of work on Wednesday or Friday.
“We’re putting together a petition so once we finish it, by Wednesday or Friday we will submit it to the President,” he said.
He explained that the allegations by the EC chairperson and her deputies boarder on fraud and criminality hence require thorough investigations to establish the truth or otherwise of the issues.
Dr. Ayew Afriyie, who is also the Member of Parliament for Effiduase Asokore in the Ashanti Region, said his outfit is interested in the matter because they believe there should be transparency at the country’s Electoral Management Body.
He accused the chairperson of the commission and her deputies for disrespecting due processes leading to the current impasse.
Dr. Afriyie who expressed worry over the brouhaha at the EC indicated that they expect President Akufo-Addo to act immediately to restore the confidence of Ghanaians in EC.
