The Assembly Municipal Assembly is pursuing a business man for failing to secure building permits from the Assembly for a number of properties he owns in the municipality.

Alhaji Rahim, who is said to own more than ten high, rising buildings in Ashaiman, did not acquire a single permit for any of the properties.

Some of the properties houses Ashaiman branch of Unibank, Firstrust bank, Melcome, Internal Revenue Service (GRA) and a hosts of businesses including a yet to be commissioned filling station around Ashaiman toll booth.

Our sources indicated that Alhaji Rahim was well connected to the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration and that is why he flouted the Assembly's permitting procedures.

Other notable properties whose owners did not also secure building permit include Afariwa Homes and Tema International School.

Speaking to Oman News in an interview, the Municipal Chief for Ashaiman Mr. Albert Boakye Okyere, said the municipal works engineer, Ing Daniel Kwadwo Afrifa, upon assuming office about four months ago conducted an auditing of the permits which the Assembly had issued.

He explained that "surprisingly all the high rising buildings you see around the owners did not acquire permits from the Assembly."

He noted that the Assembly following the revelations wrote letters attached them with invoices indicating how much the owners including Alhaji Rahim owe the Assembly.

"As I speak we have been able to rake in 95,538, within two weeks," Mr. Albert Okyere said, adding that “there are some that we have given them some few days to pay but if they fail we will not hesitate to drag them to court.”

Mr. Albert Okyere who commended the Assembly’s Engineer for his effort warned that the Assembly would not relent on its effort in pursuing all those who have properties in Ashaiman without building permit and urged such property owners to quickly move to settle the issue before the Assembly comes after them.
