Fuel stations must put in place measures to prevent fire outbreak-Dr. Amin Adam

Deputy Minister of Energy in charge of Petroleum Dr Mohammed Amin Adam has charged Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) to put in place adequate measures to prevent fire outbreaks in all the filling stations across the country.

He implored the Oil Marketing Companies not to be interested only in making money, but also to be concerned about lives and properties which are lost whenever there is fire outbreak.

"When there is accident and shops or fuel stations are to be closed down... Jobs are involved. Cost is involved. It is not only those who are injured that suffer. You as industry operator also suffer.

"We should agree as a country that economic interest should not be pursued at the expense our lives. We must do business within a sustainable environment," he added.

Speaking at the launch of 2017 safety week by the Association of Oil Marketing Companies (AOMC) under the theme "Petroleum Safety, it's your right" Dr Amin Adam expressed worry about the recent spate of fire outbreaks at fillings stations in the country.

Dr. Amin Adams explained that human beings are the most important economic resources which needed to be protected.

This he said is the reason why Chapter 24 (1) of the 1992 constitution of the Republic of Ghana places emphasis on the need for safe working environment for Ghanaian workers.

He noted that in the event of fire outbreak not only workers are affected but clients too and urged them to work assiduously to prevent fire outbreaks from happening.

He disclosed that the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) as part of effort to ensure safety of fuel stations will conduct safety audit on filling the stations across the country in the coming days.

He urged the OMCs to collaborate with the NPA to ensure the success of the exercise
