The Greater Accra Regional Minister Ishmael Ashitey has cautioned newly elected Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives in the region against using their position to engage in corrupt practices.
According to him, such practices would not be tolerated by the Nana Akufo-Addo led New Patriotic Party government.
Mr. Ashitey explained that they (MMDCEs) are expected to ensure judicious use of all the funds available to them.
“Avoid corrupt practices and ensure value for money in all your transactions,” he warned.
The Regional Minister gave the caution at the swearing- in ceremony of 13 MMDCEs at the regional coordinating Council on Wednesday in Accra.
He called on them to eschew partisan politics in the performance of their duties, saying “let the development of your people and the entire MMDAs be your focus.”
“Be mindful that you are assuming this high office in the MMDAs at a time when they are faced with a lot of challenges ranging from unemployment, sanitation, environmental degradation, waste collection, management and disposal , traffic congestion ,leakages in revenue mobilization, low revenue mobilization land guards menace, chieftaincy disputes and above all administrative and managerial challenges,” Mr. Ashitey stressed.
He indicated that “your continuous stay in office to a large extent would depend on your performance and the extent to which you have adhered to the rules and regulations governing the conduct of business at the Assembly.”
He advised them to study the new local governance Act 2016, Act 936, the 1992 constitution, public financial management Act 2016 Act 921 and other relevant laws to guide their operations.
