The Convener of Media Coalition Against Galamsey Mr Ken Ashigbey has urged President Nana Akufo-Addo to remain resolute in his fight against illegal mining popularly known as “galamsey.”
Section of Ghanaians appears to be unhappy with the bold decision taken by President Nana Akufo–Addo to end the menace of the illegal mining in the country.
While some of the illegal miners have welcomed President’s decision to end the act, due to the devastation it has caused to our water bodies and forest belt, others are resisting it, claiming that it would throw them out of jobs.
Speaking in an interview with Oman FM, Mr. Ken Ashigbey who is also the Managing Director of Graphic Communications Group Company charged President Nana Akufo-Addo not to back down on his fight to end illegal mining despite stiff opposition by section of Ghanaians.
According to him, those criticizing him are in the minority as compared to majority of Ghanaians who are supporting the fight to end the menace.
“Those of us who are supporting the fight against galamsey are more than those opposing it. We are saying that galamsey has caused a lot of havoc to us as a nation and it’s about time we end it. And so we are telling the President not to be shaken. We’re strongly behind the government so President Nana Akufo-Addo shouldn’t worry at all,” he stated.
Mr. Ken Ashigbey, who expressed worry over the activities of illegal miners, disclosed that a research by CSIR has confirmed the presence of mercury and cyanide in boreholes and food in communities affected by galamsey.
He said galamsey threatens the survival of everyone in the country and called on all Ghanaians to rally behind the government to stop galamsey in order to save lives and the country from total destruction.
He warned that failure to do so would bring serious repercussions on the nation.
He said the group is collating signatures of Ghanaians who are against galamsey and petition the Speaker of Parliament, Chief Justice and the President for them to end illegal mining.
