A member of Progressive Peoples Party (PPP) Mr. Felix Mantey has lauded president Nana Akufo-Addo for banning government officials from purchasing state vehicles when leaving office.

According to him, the decision is a step in the right direction and urged Ghanaians to applaud the President for that.

He concurred with the concerns by the President that the policy which allows government officials who are leaving to purchase their official vehicle was abused by the officials of the previous administration.

President Nana Akufo- Addo announced a ban on purchasing of state vehicles by government officials at the end of a three day retreat at Peduase Lodge in the Eastern Region.

“That policy will no longer work. No official is going to have the opportunity to buy any official car…Nobody is going to have that capacity anymore,” President Akufo-Addo said.

“As you know, I’ve put a ban, for the time being, on the purchase of any new vehicles for members of this government,” he said, adding “No matter how dilapidated are the vehicles there are in our fleet, we are going to have to make do with them. These are difficult time for the Ghanaian people."

Speaking on Oman FM's national agenda, Felix Mantey said: In my view Nana Addo is sending a signal that he wants to leave office with clean hands .He doesn't want a situation whereby after he exit office Ghanaians will be talking about him."

He underscored the need to fortify the directive by backing it with legislation.

This he said is necessary because of the previous experience where former President John Dramani Mahama gave a similar directive but was not adhered to by his appointees.
