Some traders at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra, the capital of Ghana are appealing to government to take immediate steps to stop foreigners who are engaging in retail business in the country.

According to the traders, they are facing unfair competition from these foreigners and this they explained is affecting their businesses.

Executives of Circle Youth Traders Association, the umbrella body of the traders, who walked into the offices of Oman FM on Tuesday lamented bitterly about how the influx of these foreigners has affected their daily sales.

Chairman of the Circle Youth Traders Association Hasheem Hamid told Oman FM that, their members are now recording lows sales because “these foreigners have reduced the price of their goods just to attract buyers.”

He said most buyers now prefer buying from these foreigners even though their goods are of inferior quality.

Mr. Hamid reminded government that it is illegal for foreign nationals to engage in retailing business since GIPC Act 865 clearly states that petty trading is the preserve of indigenes.

“These foreign nationals particularly Nigerians have taken over our businesses to the extent that some of them are dealing in phones and phone repairs. Why should this happen in our country?” he quizzed.

He hinted that they are considering putting together a task force to deal with the situation since their presence threatens the survival of their business.

“We are going to put together a taskforce, which will comprise our members, police and immigration officers to kick them out,” he said.

He vowed that their members would no longer allow these foreigners who are into retailing to collapse their businesses and therefore would take legitimate steps to protect their businesses.

“We will not allow them to collapse our businesses because this is what we do to get money to feed our families.

Laud Appiah Danquah, the organizer of Circle Youth Traders Association also urged government to deal with the situation before it gets out of hand.

The Organizer who commended government for its effort to tackle the menace of galamsey underscored the need for government to see the involvement of foreigners in retailing as a national security threats and deal with it that it.
