Give us helicopters to fight fire outbreaks – GNFS to gov’t

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) is appealing to the government to supply them with helicopters to deal with fire outbreaks in high rise buildings.

The demand for the helicopters, according to the Service, is spurred by the difficulties they encounter in dealing with fire situations in high rise buildings and places where accessibility have always been a challenge.

Deputy Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, Mr. Prince Billy Anaglatey, who made this appeal on behalf of the Service on Accra based radio station, said their request if granted will save the country lots of money.

“We have gotten a stage where the Fire Service should be equipped with a helicopter or a fire fighting aerodrome so that we will be able to fight fires from a height. When this is achieved, the situation of lack of accessibility will then be a thing of the past. But here is the situation we do not have so things are bad. Some residential and commercial areas have been very difficult to access,” he noted.

His comments comes after the GNFS had a difficult time in quenching the fire that gutted the Central Market in Kumasi on Monday, April 10, 2017, where several properties are reported to have been destroyed by the inferno.
