The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic
Party, Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako has denied claims by
the opposition NDC that he is involved in illegal mining
activities popularly known as galamsey.
Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly known as Wontumi
accused the opposition National Democratic Congress
(NDC) of deliberately tagging him as someone, who deals
in galamsey for political expediency.
A ministerial task force which was formed by the then
ruling National Democratic Congress, to clamp down on
illegal mining in 2013, raided the HANSOL Mining Limited
owned by Wontumi and took away gold bars and destroyed
several equipments and other valuable items.
The action was borne out on suspicion that the company
had brought in some Chinese nationals to engage in illegal
mining activities.
He subsequently sued the government and he is reported
to have been awarded a judgment debt to the tune of
US1billion.
Speaking on the issue of galamsey which has become topical for
media discussion because of the devastation it has caused to
water bodies, Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako said, he had never
engaged in galamsey as claimed by then NDC government.
According to him, he was lawfully engaging in mining activities
and urged the public to disregard the opposition NDC.
“I have never engaged in galamsey before because I’m a patriotic
citizen who wouldn’t want to destroy the environment and our
water bodies,” he stated.
He said the NDC deliberately tagged him because of his
popularity adding that his affiliation to then opposition NPP time
was a threat to government.
