Mr. Fredrick Agyarko Oduro, Head of Department of Urban and Environmental Management at the Institute of Local Government Studies.
Head of Department of Urban and Environmental Management at the Institute of Local Government Studies, Mr. Fredrick Agyarko Oduro, has called on assembly members in the various Municipal and District Assemblies to emulate their colleagues by given an overwhelming endorsement of President nominees for MCE and DCE positions.
Assembly members of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Secondi Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly and Tamale Metropolitan Assembly few days ago overwhelmingly endorsed the President nominees for the four metropolitan assemblies.
The development, was welcomed as a good sign by local governance experts, as it moved away from the pattern, where nominees goes through hectic time, sometimes either second or third rounds sittings before they are endorsed by the two third majority of the assembly members stipulated by the Local Governance Act 2016, Act 936.

Some Ghanaians are of that the view that the assembly members deliberately stretch the nominees in order to offer them bribes before they approve him or her.
Mr. Fredrick Agyarko Oduro said it is illegal for any assembly member to demand money before approving a nominee and urged those engaging in such practices to desist from it.

Mr. Fredrick Agyarko Oduro was speaking as a resource person at a two days workshop organized by the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly to build the capacity of the assembly members on the new Local Governance Act 2016, Act 936.
The two days capacity workshop which was very interactive equipped the assembly members on the decentralization and district assembly concept and also exposed the assembly members to some weakness in the new Act.
He cautioned the assembly members to be mindful of the absence of Chief Executives which is affecting the operations of the assemblies and urged the assembly members to take a cue from their colleagues and unite confirm the President nominees as soon as possible in order to make the assembly fully operational.

The Dean of Studies and Research at the Institute of Local Government Studies Dr. Eric Oduro Osae also noted that the Local Governance Act 2016, Act 936 is fraught with inconsistencies , explaining that a committee had been put in place to review the Act to deal with the challenges.
He charged the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly to rebrand and position itself to attract investments and funding from development partners.
