New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament for Fanteakwa South in the Eastern Region Hon Kofi Okyere Agyekum has disputed the assertion that former President John Dramani Mahama stand the chance of returning to power should he decides to contest the 2020 general elections.
He argued that Ghanaians will never make the mistake of returning Mr. Dramani Mahama to power because of wide spread corruption under his tenure and the level of incompetence he exhibited.
His comment comes on the back of calls by former ministers and appointees of the previous NDC government to field Mr. John Dramani Mahama as the party’s presidential candidate in the next general elections.
They claim the former president is the most marketed person within the opposition NDC to lead the party to recapture power from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the next general elections.
But speaking on Oman FM’s National Agenda on Tuesday, Hon. Kofi Okyere Agyekum, rebutted claims by the members of the opposition that former president John Dramani Mahama will be voted back to power because he is the most marketed person in the party.
“How can they say that John Mahama is the most marketable person when his votes dropped from 50% to 44% in last year’s election? he quizzed.
He was of the view that, those calling on John Mahama to stage a comeback are doing so because they see him to be the one with wealth to support the party, arguing that John Mahama’s marketability claim is untenable.
Touching on the Professor Kwesi Botchwey Committee which is going round to investigate the cause of the NDC’s defeat in last year’s election Hon. Okyere Agyekum described it as waste of energy and resources.
He explained that, he is surprised the opposition had form a 13-member committee to investigate why they lost the elections when they are very much aware that Ghanaians rejected Mr. John Mahama and NDC because of incompetence and corruption.
“What at all will influence Ghanaians to return John Mahama to power? Will they vote him back so that their hardships continue? Will they vote him so that the dumsor will continue? he questioned.
He wondered how Ghanaians would make the mistake of returning a president who mismanaged the economy resulting to growth rate dropping from 9% to 3% under his term of office to power.
