Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration of being discriminatory against other tax payers by scrapping market toll imposed on head porters popularly known as kayayeis by the previous government.
According to him, there should be equity and fairness in every tax regime and not that others would be made to pay taxes while others do not pay.
He stated that it is inappropriate for the government to exempt kayayeis from paying market tolls since other citizens who are equally working are being taxed.
“If your tax regime seems to be discriminatory what will you achieve,” the NDC’s deputy scribe quizzed.
The governing New Patriotic Party announced the abolishing of what it described as nuisance taxes including market toll imposed on Kayayeis in its maiden budget and economic statement, which was presented to parliament by the Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta on March 2, 2017.
The government decision to exempt kayayeis from paying market toll has not settled well with the opposition National Democratic Congress kicking against it.
Speaking on Oman Fm’s National Agenda on Monday, Koku Anyidoho argued that the implementation of taxes lies in the bosom of the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) and wondered why the central government abolished the market toll on kayayeis.
He explained that the government decision would have a serious toll on the revenue of the various MMDAs.
He claimed that some traders are also demanding that government ensures fairness by abolishing some of the taxes they are being charged.
He charged the government to heed to the concerns of the traders by reversing its decision.
