The deceased, Jennifer Nyarko

Preliminary investigations into the death of Jennifer Nyarko, a 23 -year-old Level 400 student of the University of Ghana has confirmed that the deceased committed suicide.

The deceased, an Agriculture and Consumer Science student was reportedly found dead by a student, who was on her way to pray at dawn on Wednesday, 8th March, 2017.

There were rumours that the deceased may have been killed by an assailant and dumped at her hostel, Akuafo Hall Annex A.

But speaking on Oman Fm’s National Agenda, Thursday, the Legon District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Mr. Emmanuel Kofi Anokye dismissed the suspicion of foul play in the death of the deceased.

According to him, their investigations so far do not point to or confirms that she was killed by someone.

“Our preliminary investigations indicate that she jumped from the fourth floor of the Akuafo Hall to her death. In fact nobody pushed her rather she jumped,” he said.

DSP Anokye said the parents of the deceased told the police that their daughter had been suffering from mental disorder for about five years now and were of the view that might have forced her to commit suicide.

“They told the police that the deceased gained admission to the university in 2012, but all of a sudden she started suffering from mental disorder and she even deferred her course to 2013. They indicated that she had been receiving treatment from a medical doctor at the Valley View University until the day the of the incident.”

DSP Anokye said their investigations also revealed that before the deceased died she had a long conversation with a female friend and told her that she was going through mental problem and asked her to tell her pastor to pray for her.

He told that police had taken statements from the roommates of the deceased adding they have not concluded with their investigations into the case.
