We'll prosecute those using formalin to preserve 'koobi' if-Fisheries Minister

Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development Hon. Elizabeth Afoley Quaye has cautioned fish dealers who are using formalin to preserve dried tilapia popularly known as 'koobi' to desist from it.

According to her, those who would be caught will be made to face the full rigours of the law.

Formalin is a colourless strong-smelling chemical substance usually used in industry of textiles, plastics, papers, paint, construction, and well known to preserve human corpse.

Hon Afoley Quaye was commenting on a revelation by Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, that dealers in dried tilapia popularly known as koobi are using formalin to preserve the fish.

Speaking on Oman FM National Agenda, Hon Afoley Quaye, who described the development as dangerous and worrying assured of her commitment to deal with the issue.

She indicated that her Ministry would collaborate with the Ministry of Environment, Science Technology and Innovation to track those involved in the acts.

"My outfit will collaborate the Ministry of Environment, Science Technology and Innovation as well as the police and form a taskforce to track those unscrupulous people and arrest them,"she stated.
