Gonja youth in Tema and Ashaiman municipality have given Member of Parliament for Ashaiman Ernest Henry Norgbey one week ultimatum to withdraw his suit challenging the appointment of Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection.
Addressing a press conference in Ashaiman Monday the leader of the group Alhassan Camel said, they would rise against the MP if he fails to withdraw the suit.
"We are calling on our MP to withdraw the suit against the minister for Gender, children and social protection who is our sister in one week. His failure to do so will incur our wrath," he warned.
He accused the MP for engaging in fruitless legal tousle, arguing the MP is only seeking public attention since he is a new entrant into parliament.
"In as much as we believe that our MP has constitutional right to challenge anything he deemed illegal in the court of competent jurisdiction, we hold the view that as one of the new entrants into the Parliament, he is only capitalizing on this triviality to seek the attention of the general public to gain popularity. This is because, we do not think there is any other motive which would compel him to take such a step, since the National Service Scheme secretariat had given madam Otiko Afisa Djaba a temporal waiver pending the composition of the board of the scheme."
Hon Henry Norgbey and his colleague Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, MP for Bodi in the Western Region filed a joint suit to challenge the appointment of Madam Otiko Afisa Djaba as Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection for not rendering national service.
But Alhassan Camel believed the legal action against the Minister who is their sister is useless since she gave convincing proof as to why she did not do national service.
He noted that Ashaiman constituency is fraught with several challenges, ranging from sanitation, traffic congestion, insecurity and youth unemployment and urged him to concentrate on tackling the problems.
"We expect our Member of Parliament to collaborate with the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly to address some of these challenges and not to engage in fruitless legal tousle, with our sister Otiko Afisa Djaba, who is very passionate about addressing the myriad of problems facing women and children in the country," he advised.
He added that "we expect our MP to work hard to fulfill his campaign promises to the people of Ashaiman instead of seeking popularity."
"What the youth of Ashaiman needs are sustainable jobs and opportunities to develop their God given potentials."
