New Patriotic Party executives in the Tema East constituency in the Greater Accra Region have cautioned the Regional Chairman of the party Mr. Ishmael Ashitey to stop manipulating the ongoing selection process for the appointment of the Metropolitan Chief Executive for Tema to favour his nephew.

The party warned that any attempt by the Regional Chairman and Minister designate for the Greater Accra would be fiercely resisted.

"His attempt to stampede the selection process in total disregard of the voice of the masses is self-seeking, to say the least, a recipe for political instability which will lead to disintegration of the party."

Speaking at a press conference, Monday, the Tema East Constituency Chairman of the party Nene Ofoe Teye, said "I and the entire leadership of the party in Tema Metropolis will not countenance these acts. We cannot be seen to be taking the mandate of the people for granted, yes we can’t afford to douse their hope in us as a party and ignore their wishes."

He accused Mr. Ashitey of writing deceitful letters to the Presidency and the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development purported to have originated from the Traditional Council giving blessings to his preferred choice.

"Let it be on record without any fear of contradiction that, the owner and Leader of Tema Traditional Council, Nii Adjei Krakue II T, The Manklalo who is the second in command and the Spiritual Leader of Tema (Nii Sakumo Wulomo) have all denied knowledge of the said letter.

"The right and authority to sign any such letter belongs to the Tema Mantse and as such once he hasn’t sanctioned the fraudulent letter to the presidency and the ministry, it can’t represent the voice of our traditional Leaders and custodians of the land. The act and the letter are deceptive and must be treated with the contempt and disdain they deserve," he added.

Mr. Ofoe said Mr. Ashitey's attempt to influence the choice of MCE for Tema is quiet strange because "He is on record to have told the two parliamentary candidates (East & West) that victory for the NPP (Parliamentary & Presidential) is not possible."

"His lukewarm approach to the campaign in these areas is public knowledge. He literally gave up, contributing nothing significant to the success chalked. How we won the parliamentary seat from a margin of 3 as a record in 2012 to this impressive figure of 4,025 in the 2016 elections remains a magic and a tale to him. It is not surprising also that he was visibly shocked by the massive victory recorded by the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the constituency, from a vote deficit of 1,462 to 6,268 in the just ended elections."

He called on the Appointing authority to ensure fairness in the selection process so that the right person is offered the job.

"We are by this advising the leadership of our great Party to be wary of these machinations and the ripples they stand to generate."

“Should our leaders betray us, (for that matter the majority of the people), we won’t hesitate to roll out our plans and series of aggressive (but Lawful) activities to protest any wrong choice that is not in the larger interest of the party and the wellbeing of the people we have committed to serve,” he added.
