6 KG pupils die in classroom collapse at Breman Gyambra

Six kindergarten pupils of the Breman Gyambra Methodist KG School in the Central Region died on Tuesday morning after their dilapidated classroom block collapsed this [Tuesday] morning.

Four other pupils are in critical condition, but are responding to treatment. ›

Oman FM’s correspondent Albert Mensah, reported that the incident occurred around 8:30 am when the children were about to start their lessons.

He stated that there were visible cracks all over the classroom building.

According to him, the entire township had been thrown into state of mourning following the sad incident.

Albert Mensah indicated that the parents of deceased are devastated by the incident and wailing uncontrollably.

The bodies of the deceased have since been deposited at the Breman Asikuma Our Lady of Grace Government Hospital morgue awaiting autopsy.

In an interview with Oman News, after visiting the scene, the Breman Asikuma District Director of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice, (CHRAJ) Samuel Donkor indicated that the police, ambulance and the fire service were at the scene to aid in rescue attempts.

The school has however not been closed down for the day, according to Mr. Donkor.

He said the headmaster of the school was aware of the dilapidated state of the school building stating that the PTA decided to levy pupils to repairs the school.

Mr. Donkor further hinted that, CHRAJ may help the parents of the deceased and injured pupils to get some compensation from government.

“I left a message with the head teacher that if the parents come, they should tell them to come to the CHRAJ office so we assist them as to how they will get some compensation from the government,” he said
