Dr. Bawumia pays unannounced visit to Tema Port

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on Monday paid an unannounced visit to the Tema port to familiarize with the operations of the port.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia began his familiarization visit with Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, where he met top management of Customs and discussed ways of improving on revenue generation for the country as well as ensuring efficient and effective delivery of services.
He assured them of government commitment to retooling the Division to enable them deliver on their mandate.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and his entourage proceeded to Meridian Ports Services (MPS), where he also met with the CEO Mr. Mohammed Samara and interacted with him for several minutes.
Mr. Mohammed Samara took Dr Bawumia through a video clip of the $1.5billion ongoing port expansion works to the admiration of the Vice President.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia also visited Nick TC scan, Golden Jubilee terminal and Atlas terminal as part of his visit to the Tema port.
He called on the various agencies working at the Tema port to improve on their service delivery to make Tema port a preferred port in the West Africa sub-region.
Some importers and clearing agents at the Port lamented about excessive taxes being charged by port authorities and appealed to the Vice President to ensure that government review some of the taxes downwards to cushion them.
Speaking to journalists, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia emphasized that his visit was to familiarize with the operations of the port and look at steps government would take to address some of the challenges facing importers and exporters to ensure efficient delivery of services.
“This is to get a good understanding of the issues and take that onboard for policy formulation and to make things efficient at the port.
“You have to understand that Ghana is not an island; we are in competition with other ports in the sub region and so we want to be able to improve the performance of the port so that it will really increase economic activity in Ghana and therefore we will see more jobs being created,” he said.
