New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament for Assin Central in the Central Region Hon. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has revealed massive fraudulent dealings at the Public Utilities and Regulatory Commission (PURC).
The firebrand MP accused the Executive Secretary of PURC Mr. Samuel Sarpong and the Public Affairs and External Relations Director Nana Yaa Jantuah of engineering all the corrupt deals at PURC.
“These are the persons who are behind all the corrupt deals at the PURC,” he alleged.
Speaking on Oman’s FM’s political analysis programme “Boiling Point” Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, said the two influenced the selection of an IT firm in 2012, to develop software to facilitate the operations of PURC, but said the IT firm failed to develop the software.
According to him, an amount of $750,000 was approved for the IT firm, but explained that “as we speak the PURC cannot even tell when the software will be delivered to them.”
Akompreko as he is affectionately called also revealed how Mr. Samuel Sarpong transferred funds of PURC into his personal accounts with the Agriculture Development Bank (ADB.
He said Samuel Sarpong transferred Ghc 436,000 belonging to PURC in tranches of Ghc 165,000 and Ghc 271,000.
Kennedy Agyapong who expressed disgust at Mr. Samuel Sarpong’s dealings also revealed how PURC spent a colossal Ghc163, 000 on a seminar in Kumasi and $32,000 on one Dr. Annan, who went for training in US.
He said “they went for a seminar Kumasi and they spent Ghc 163,000.When I looked at the list I detected that Ghc20, 000 was given to Asantehene’s protocol, per diem was Ghc86, 000 and the food they ate was Ghc 1,800. Then I asked how many people attended the seminar that their food is lesser than their per diem?
“I have promised Ghanaians to be gentle else I would have exploded...” he said.
He said he does not understand why PURC could be so insensitive to Ghanaians who struggle to pay their utilities bills.
He called on the Nana Akufo-Addo led New Patriotic Party government to scrap PURC arguing that it is a useless entity.
