We’ll review energy sector agreements-Boakye Agyarko

Minister designate for Energy, Power and Petroleum, Mr. Boakye Agyarko, has hinted of plans by the Akufo Addo government to review all the power purchase agreements(PPA) signed by the Mahama administration.

He said some of the agreements would be cancelled outright, while others will be deferred.

This, he explained, is to ensure that there is value for money as far as power generation in the country is concerned.

Speaking on Oman FM’s political analysis programme “Boiling Point “Mr. Boakye Agyarko revealed that the previous administration signed as many as 48 power purchase agreements(PPA) with some independent power producers(IPP).

The 48 power purchase agreements, according the Mr. Boakye, would translate into construction of 48 power plants.

Government intention, he said, was to increase the country’s energy capacity from 3,644 megawatts to about 8,000 megawatts.

However, Mr. Boakye Agyarko said the country only needed about 5000 megawatts of power hence the need to review the agreements and do away with some of them.

“It doesn’t make sense to me that we have about 48 PPAs. There are some we will have canceled and there are some which have to be deferred.

Mr. Agyarko also hinted of government plan to disclose to Ghanaians the state of the country’s energy sector adding that government also would outline a number of measures to address some of the challenges.
