The Trade and Industry Minister designate Mr. Allan Kwadwo Kyeremanten has assured that Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration will support private investors to establish additional sugar factories in the country as part of government’s agenda to create jobs.

He said government is interested in reducing the huge import bill for sugar explaining that government would take the necessary steps to achieve that objective.

Answering questions from the 25 member Parliamentary Appointment Committee on the revived Komenda Sugar Factory, the minister designate expressed readiness to create an enabling environment by making sure that the sugar industry become attractive to investors.

“I will support any move that would bring in additional investors to establish additional sugar factories so that hopefully, by the end of the term of our office we would probably have reduced significantly the import of sugar to the barest minimum,” he stated.

The minister designate outlined a number of measures to ensure the sustainability of the sugar industry including establishing sugar cane plantations.

He promised that Akufo-Addo’s government would review all the processes started by previous government regarding the Komenda Sugar Factory.

He noted that the previous government approved a loan facility of $24million for the development of sugar cane plantation and promised to make sure that the loan is utilized.

“My understanding is that a process had already been started. I intend to review that process and have it completed. Again, I understand that a loan of $24milion to support the factory was also approved by parliament so we’re going to utilize the loan for its purpose.
