The Member of Parliament for Afiduase Asokore in the Ashanti Region Hon. Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie has lauded government over its plan to boost the country’s agric sector by introducing “Planting for food and job” programme.

Minister designate for Food and Agriculture Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto yesterday announced government plan to launch what he described as “Planting for food and jobs” as part of measures to boost the country’s agric sector.

The programme which is scheduled to take off in March 2017, and the next farming season is expected to create over 750,000 jobs for the youth.

But contributing to discussions on Oman FM’s National Agenda regarding the policy on Tuesday, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, who expressed conviction about the feasibility of the programme was, however of the view that, there should be engagement with the youth to enable them embrace the policy.

He said the programme will not be successful if the youth are not engaged before it is rolled out.

He thus called on the minister designate to immediately organize a forum to bring all the youth groups in the country together to deliberate on the policy for them also to share their views.

“If the minister will listen to me he should organize a forum and bring all the youth groups together and let them deliberate on the “planting for food and jobs” policy.

Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie was hopeful the youth would be encouraged to go into farming after the forum stressing that they will no more view farming as an enterprise for the aged.
