The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Ashaiman Constituency in the Greater Accra Region has denied media reports suggesting that supporters of the party have taken over the running of some public toilets in the area, following the party’s victoy in the December 7 polls.
The party also denied reprorts that its supporters had attacked the National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament elect for the constituency Mr Ernest Henry Norgbey.
At a press conference which was addressed by the Contituency Secretary Mr Emmanuel Chapman , the party accused the executives of the outgoing National Democratic Congress in the constituency of being behind the “false publication” in the media.
“Our investigations so far indicates that executives of the NDC in the constituency are sponsoring this just to make our party look unpopular because prior to the elections they had told Ghanaians that our flabearer who is now the President-elect Nana Akufo-Addo is violent and Ghanaians didn’t listen to those lies and voted for him so they are doing that to create an impression that Nana Akufo-Addo is indeed a violent person,” he said.
He argued that the NDC executive in the constituency cannot pretend to be innocent of the fabricated and concocted stories against the party because of similar things they did ahead of the polls.
“Before the elections, the NDC planted stories in the newspapers by using their friends in the media that the NPP was stock pilling weapons in the constituency to be used to cause trouble during the eelctions.
“They even went ahead by saying that our candidate in the person of Alhaji Yakubu Labaran Barry was also secretly training some people to steal ballot boxes on the day of the elections. We knew this was a propaganda to make our party look unpopular and we thought it was going to end, once the elections are over, but after the elections, we have seen a trend where our opponents are claiming that our supporters have seized public tiolets in the constituency, since the party won the elections, which is not true,’’Mr Emmanuel Chapman stated.
He however confirmed reports of the taken over of the toll booth on Tema –Accra motorway by supporters of the NPP on Monday morning.
According to him, supporters of the party went to the toll booth and confiscated the sales but said the money was later handed over to the workers when the police were called to intervene.
Mr. Emmanuel Chapman who condemmed the party’s supporters for their action disclosed that he had informed the Ashaiman District Police Commander to arrest any supporter of the party who will attempt to take over any public toilet and prosecute him or her.
Some supporters of the outgoing National Democratic Congress(NDC) in 2008 after the party was declared winner of the elections went round and took over the running of all the public toilets in the constituency.
