The Gonja Youth Leader in Ashaiman Municipality in the Greater Accra Region, Chief Alhassan Kamel, has called on the National Peace Council to rather advise the Electoral Commission (EC) to be neutral in the discharge of their duties by not siding with any of the political parties contesting this year’s elections to ensure peaceful polls.

He said he does not understand why the National Peace Council continually appeals to the youth and the political parties to ensure that the elections become peaceful when such call should be directed to the EC, the referee.

According to him, the youth would not rise up to cause violence if the EC provided the level playing field for all the parties contesting the elections.

“Peace Council should rather advise the EC but not the youth because the actions and inactions of the EC can provoke the youth to rise up to cause violence. There is no way the youth will cause trouble if the elections are free and fair,” he stated.

Speaking to Oman News, Chief Alhassan Kamel emphasized on the need for the EC to put the interest of the country first and organize free and fair elections.

“Whether the country would be peaceful during and after the elections or not would depend solely on the Electoral Commission,” he explained.

“We entrust this country into the hands of the EC from now to December 10. If Ghana will survive after this year’s election, will depend on the EC so we are watching them,” he added.

He cautioned the EC chairperson against rigging the elections in favour of a particular candidate.

Chief Alhassan Kamil urged personnel of the security services who would be providing security during the elections not to compromise the security of the nation.

He urged them to deal ruthlessly with trouble makers from any side of the political divide.

He pledged the commitment of the youth in Ashaiman saying, "We will ensure that the town remains peaceful during and after the elections."
