The Presidential Candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) Nana Akufo-Addo is likely to secure one touch victory in this year’s election, a survey by the Department of Political Science of the University of Ghana, Legon has suggested.

According to the survey, Nana Akufo-Addo will obtain 49.4% of the total votes in 24 swing constituencies while President Mahama of the NDC will obtain 39.6 % of the votes.

The survey covered a sample size of about 2,400 respondents.

The survey which was sponsored Konrad-Adenauer –Stiftung (KAS) was aimed to assess the thematic issues and dynamic which voters will consider in the determination of their choices at the polls.

Presenting the findings of the survey, the head of the research team and a lecturer at the Political Science Department, Dr. Isaac Owusu Mensah said majority of the respondents indicated their readiness to vote for the NPP because they believe the party has a better campaign message as compared to the governing NDC.

He gave several factors as the reasons why majority of the voters in different regions had planned to cast their vote for either the NPP or the NDC.

He said respondents in the Central Region in particular complained bitterly about lack of jobs, collapse of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and government inability to disclose the cause of death of late President JEA Mills, who was the illustrious son of the region.

“For those in the Brong Ahafo Region their major concern is about the DKM issue. They feel government had failed in handling the issue so the affected persons have decided to vote for a change in government so that they can retrieve their monies,” he said.

Speaking to Oman FM, after the presentation, Dr. Isaac Owusu underscored the need for both NDC and NPP to mobilize their support base to go and vote if they want to win.

He noted that Central Region and Greater Accra which are part of the four swing regions in every election would be won by the opposition NPP due to several factors.
