The Policy Advisor of the opposition New Patriotic Party Mr. Boakye Agyarko has urged consumers of petroleum products to vote against President John Dramani Mahama for adjusting fuel prices upward barely two months to the December 7 polls.
Boakye Agyarko who is also the Chairman of the New Patriotic Party's Energy Committee accused President Mahama of being insensitive to Ghanaians particularly drivers.
“I’m urging the drivers to demonstrate their anger and unhappiness about this government by voting against them on December 7 to let them know that you want change in government,” Mr. Agyarko stressed.
A statement issued by COPEC on Monday announced between 10%-11% increment in fuel products by government.
The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) issued a counter press statement claiming that the said increments in fuel products were false.
However, it has turned out to be true that government had increased the cost of fuel products.
But speaking on Oman FM's political analysis programme "Boiling Point" Tuesday Evening Mr. Agyarko accused the National Petroleum Authority of being deceitful.
“Is NPA telling us that filling station operators increased the cost of fuel without their knowledge? Are they also saying that because they have not posted the increment on their (NPA) website so it’s not true? When you go to the filling station you will realize that the price you paid last week and this week are not the same. So they should tell us the truth and stop the deceit,” Mr. Agyarko stated.
According to him, only insensitive administrations like the ruling National Democratic Congress would increase the cost of fuel at the time when Ghanaians are already bearing the brunt of the mismanagement of the economy.
“At the end of the day the taxi driver knows that the cost of the fuel had been increased by this government so NPA should be honest,” he indicated.
He blamed government for introducing as many as six different taxes on fuel.
He mentioned Excise tax, Energy Fund levy, Energy Debt Recovery levy, Road fund, Special Petroleum Tax and Price Stabilization and Recovery levy.
