The Deputy National Communications Officer for Zongo Caucus, the official wing of National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Zongo communities, Awal Mohammed, who announced his defection to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Wednesday has asked those in the Zongos to reject NDC and vote for NPP in December 7 polls.

He accused the ruling National Democratic Congress for failing to address the concerns of the Zongo communities adding that "NDC do not have the interest of those in the Zongos at heart."

Awal Mohammed speaking on Oman FM's political analysis programme "Boiling Point” said his decision to defect from the NDC to the NPP was based on his “principles and convictions”.

He argued that unlike the opposition New Patriotic Party which has a well thought out policy to transform the lives of those in Zongo communities, the NDC which had been the major beneficiary of votes from the Zongo communities rather do not have a single policy in its manifesto to develop the Zongo communities.

"You will be surprised that when you go through the 88 page manifesto of NDC, you will realize that it is only in page 28 they mentioned briefly to expand the Livelihood Empowerment and A Programme (LEAP) to cover Muslim's,” he stated.

“You see NDC doesn’t have a programme for the Zongo communities so it is not a party that is worth voting for,” he added.

He confessed that in 2012 when the NPP announced its plan to set up Zongo Development Fund he led a team to all the Zongo communities in the country and polluted their minds by explaining to them that the policy was not feasible.

He regretted his action saying "I have now realized that I was working against my own future and that of my brothers and sisters in the Zongos."

Awal Mohammed who is a graduate of the University of Education, Winneba, indicated that he had been unemployed since three years ago because government had failed to absorb graduates.

He described the unemployment situation in the country as dire indicating that over 300, 000 of his colleagues are still in the house because of lack of jobs.

He pledged his commitment to return to the Zongo communities and campaign for the New Patriotic Party as he did for the NDC prior to the 2012 elections.
