The Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) has condemned violent attack which has characterized ongoing vote transfer exercise in some parts of the country with a call on the security agencies to bring those behind the act to book.

The GPCC made particular mention of Suhum constituency in the Eastern Region, where thugs ransacked the EC offices and threatened to torture the Electoral Commission (EC) officials if they do not transfer the votes of people from outside the constituency, and Asunafo South constituency, in the Brong Ahafo Region, where a man had his finger cut off.

“The GPCC unreservedly condemn all those who are behind these attacks and urge them to turn away from any further planned attacks,” a statement signed by General Secretary of GPCC, Apostle Yaw Antwi stated.

The statement described the attacks as “unwarranted” noting that such violent behaviour in a developing democracy such as ours, was not needed especially at this critical time.

The council expressed worry over the inability of the security agencies in country to arrest the perpetrators and prosecuting them.

“We also call on the security agencies to live up to their word and give Ghanaians confidence that they will be able to give the citizens the protection needed to go about their normal activities.”

Below is the full statement

The Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) has noted with disquiet, the violence that has erupted in some constituencies in the ongoing voter transfer exercise.

Particular mention is made of the Suhum constituency, where it is reported that thugs ransacked the EC office and threatened to torture the Electoral Commission (EC) officials if they do not transfer the votes of people from outside the constituency, with a printer being used by the EC taken away by the thugs, and Asunafo South constituency, in the Brong Ahafo Region where a man had his finger cut off.

Our concern is that in both of these cases, no arrests seem to have been made by the relevant security agencies. Considering the success of the security services in handling such matters in the past, this seeming unresponsive posture on the part of the security apparatus, especially following many assurances from the security heads assuring Ghanaians of their preparedness to ensure the safety of all citizens before, during and after the elections, is of serious concern to us as a Council.

The GPCC unreservedly condemn all those who are behind these attacks and urge them to turn away from any further planned attacks.

They are unwarranted and the country does not need such violent behaviour in a developing democracy such as ours, and especially at this critical time.

We also call on the security agencies to live up to their word and give Ghanaians confidence that they will be able to give the citizens the protection needed to go about their normal activities.

Their ability to act swiftly and professionally in arresting and prosecuting those involved irrespective of their political affiliations will help diffuse the tension that seems to be rising in the country.

We further call on them to enforce strict discipline in the identified hotspots.

We finally call on the presidential aspirants and leadership of the political parties to condemn these happenings, keep their followers in check, and avoid coming to the rescue of thugs arrested in such activities.

Ghanaians will hold them responsible for any untoward attitude and actions that will mar the peace of our dear country.
