Eugene Sackey
New Patriotic Party Parliamentary Candidate for Upper West Akyem Constituency in the Eastern Region, Mr. Eugene Sackey, has urged his constituents to try him in the upcoming general elections since all the National Democratic Congress candidates they have voted for the past 23 years have failed them.
“Try me this year and see. I’ll not disappoint you. Have faith in me,” he appealed.
Sackey who is a teacher by profession stated that he is optimistic of annexing the seat from the incumbent National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the first time.
“This year whether NDC likes it or not we are going to take over the seat from them. It is not by word of mouth. We are on the grounds and working very hard. In fact we are determined for victory in this year’s election,” he averred.
Mr. Sackey speaking on Oman FM’s political programme “The Constituency” hosted by Akua Asabea Kroppa, said the party had taken several steps including the formation of a working groups, saying “we are campaigning vigorously particularly in the NDC’s strongholds in the constituency in a bid to increase our chances of winning the seat.”

“The drive and enthusiasm with which the supporters of the party are campaigning ahead of the December polls is encouraging,” he noted.
This is the second time Mr. Eugene Sackey is contesting the Upper West Akyem seat on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party.
He polled 14,973 votes representing 43.39% while the NDC’s Joseph Sam Amankwanor also obtained 18,073 votes representing 54.30% of the total valid votes cast during the 2012 general elections.
The ruling National Democratic Congress has held the seat since 1993 and is deemed to be one of their safest seats in the Eastern Region.
However, Mr. Eugene Sackey says he will make history by breaking the jinx and become the first NPP Member of Parliament for the constituency after 23 years of unsuccessful attempts by the party to take over the seat.

He will be contesting NDC’s parliamentary nominee, Hon. Derek Ohene Assifo Bekoe, who also doubles as the District Chief Executive of the area.
Hon. Derek Ohene Assifo Bekoe was nominated by his party, after Mr. Amankwanor, who has been the NDC Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency since January 7, 2009, tendered in his resignation in a letter dated June 21, 2016, citing his reason as personal.
Mr. Sackey, who accused the NDC MP’s for failing to champion the development of the constituency noted that the situation has infuriated the electorates are ready to vote against the NDC in the upcoming general elections.
“When the youth complete schooling they find life very difficult anything because there are no jobs. When a young complete schooling and cannot find any work to do, then resort to selling of coconut. In fact I’m not saying that coconut selling is bad but the question is: is it sustainable?” he said.
Mr Sackey, who also accused Hon. Derek Ohene Assifo Bekoe of engaging in vote buying alleged the DCE was using portion of the Common Fund meant for people with disabilities in the area to advance his political ambition, saying “He has refused to disburse the funds for the beneficiaries and rather sharing it for votes.”
Asked what he has done for the constituency, Mr Eugene Sackey enumerated a number of projects which he had used his personal resources to execute.
He mentioned provision of borehole for the people of Ndode and Nyanoa, rehabilitation of a football field at Abamkrom, grading of Nipom Town Park and supply of over 5000 gallons of water to some schools in the constituency.
He added that he had also registered hundreds of people with the Nation Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) as well as paying for the training of about 22 ladies in the constituency.
He appealed to the electorates “try him in the upcoming general elections since NDC MP’s have failed.
