Head of Human Security at the Presidency Brigadier Nunoo Mensah has raised serious concerns about the rising number of security personnel’s engaging in criminal activities in the country.

Brigadier Nunoo speaking with Kwabena Antwi Boasiako on UTV described the trend as heartbreaking and disappointing.

According to him, such “criminal characters” wouldn’t have found their way into the security services had the security agencies taken steps to conduct thorough background checks about the personnel’s before they were recruited.

“A lot of the people who are coming into the police and the army are criminals,” he stated.

There have been reports in recent times of some police and military personnel being arrested for their involvement in robbery incidents.

On Tuesday 16 August, 2016, two police officers were arrested for allegedly robbing a GCB bank Bullion van carrying millions of cedis Donkorkrom in the Eastern Region.

Then on Tuesday, 23 August, six persons, including two policemen, were also busted by the Kaneshie Police for engaging in suspected car-snatching deals.

Reacting to these reports, Brigadier Nunoo Mensah noted that the rigorous training and thorough background checks, which took place before he was enlisted into the army in 1960 had all been neglected thus giving room for all sort of persons to find their way into the security services.

“In our days enlistment into the security services was very and strict.

They went to my former school and spoke to my headmaster to find out about my character. They conducted thorough background checks to find out whether I had a criminal record or not. We went through a lot of testing and examination but today it’s not like that. And that is the problem,” he said.

Brigadier Nunoo Mensah charged the security agencies to purge themselves of the criminal characters in order to restore discipline.
