The policy advisor and Chairman of the New Patriotic Party's Energy Committee, Mr. Boakye Agyarko has accused President John Dramani Mahama for shirking his responsibility by forwarding the petition by supporters and lawyers of incarcerated Montie FM trio to the Council of State for advice.
To him, President Mahama's decision to forward the petition to the Council of State clearly demonstrates that he is not a decisive and bold leader who accepts responsibilities.
“The steps being taken by President Mahama so far show a clear sign of irresponsibility. He is afraid to accept responsibility,” he declared.
Under Article 72 (1)(a-d) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, the President of the Republic, may, acting in consultation with the Council of State, decide to exercise the Prerogative of Mercy or just grant amnesty to convicted people.
Mr. Agyarko argued that President Mahama is not compelled per the above provision to consult the Council of State since “it doesn’t say “President shall”, but rather says “President may”, so it means that the President has the responsibility to exercise his prerogative power of mercy alone without consulting the Council of State.”
Speaking on Oman FM’s political analysis programme “Boiling Point” Mr. Agyarko, wondered whether President Mahama was in support of the unwarranted attacks and vituperations incarcerated Montie trio, particularly Salifu Maase aka Mugabe unleashed on eminent Ghanaians including flagbearer of NPP, Nana Akufo-Addo, that is why he has been silence on the issue.
“These three jokers sat on radio and insulted people for months and years and not once did President Mahama make an attempt to call them to order by saying that he doesn’t support the cause they were pursuing. He was a like dump,” he noted.
Mr. Agyarko, charged President Mahama to reject the petition noting that any attempt by him to reverse the decision of the Supreme Court would amount to constitutional crisis.
Akua Donkor’s car gift
Mr. Agyarko condemned President Mahama for offering two brand new vehicles plus a house to Madam Akua Donkor, founder of Ghana Freedom Party (GFP).
According to him, it would take an insensitive person like President Mahama to dissipate state funds on an element like Akua Donkor who doesn’t contribute anything to the development of Ghana.
Mr. Agyarko, who described Akua Donkor as a joker, charged Ghanaians to rise up and speak against President Mahama for using character like Akua Donkor to entertain Ghanaians.
