President John Dramani Mahama has commissioned a Ghs 5million net mending wharf constructed by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) at the Tema fishing harbour, to facilitate the work of fishermen in the area.

The move is to create convenience for the fishermen, as one of their challenges has been a good site to mend their nets.

The concrete mending wharf was reconstructed on the request made by the fishermen to late President John Evans Atta Mills in November 2011 when he paid a working visit to the fishing harbour.

President Mahama however assured that the commissioning of the wharf had come at an opportune time

The President also cut the tape to commission four marine crafts acquired by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) and four mobile cranes, which cost $ 20 million and € 28 million respectively.

Two of the cranes were christened after two deceased former staff of GPHA, Andy Asare and Albert Essien. The other two were also named after one Engineer Okae, a former staff and the current Secretary General of Trades Union Congress (TUC), Kofi Asamoah.

Addressing fisher folks and workers at the Tema Port, President Mahama commended Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) for the strides they have made over the years.

President Mahama noted that there have been impressive developments within the port since the past four years he had been visiting the port.

He charged authorities at the port to work harder to position Tema Port as the preferred port in the West African sub-region.

President Mahama assured workers more work will be done at the country’s ports to ensure safety and the smooth running of the ports.
