The New Patriotic Party Parliamentary Candidate for Tema West Constituency Kingsley Carlos Ahenkorah has pledged his commitment to lobby for the upgrading of the Tema Polyclinic to a higher status, if elected as Member of Parliament and Nana Akufo-Addo is also given the mandate as president of Ghana in the upcoming general elections.

“I’m throwing this challenge to you, if you make Nana Akufo-Addo president of Ghana and if you make me also your Member of Parliament and since Nana Addo is going to appoint Carlos as a minister in his administration, I can tell you that this hospital will be upgraded,” he pledged.

According to Mr. Ahenkorah, “We will do everything in our power if we come to power to upgrade or better the lots of this hospital,” adding that he will ensure that all the available land at the hospital is developed.

Mr. Carlos Ahenkorah made the pledge on Monday when he donated some hospital equipments and consumables, which is valued at $50,000 to the hospital, as part of his 50th birthday anniversary.

Some of the equipments are examination couch, scanners, delivery beds, dustbins, sterilizers, and laboratory analyzers.

He explained that some of the items were donated to him by his friends in the United States of America while the rest were purchased by himself.

Mr. Ahenkorah noted that he was able to convince his friends to donate the items to him because of his good lobbying skills.

The NPP Parliamentary Candidate, who will be 50 years old on Wednesday, 20 July, 2016, said he thought it will be expedient to use monies he will expend on his birthday celebration to buy items and donate them to hospitals and educational institutions instead of throwing a big party for himself and friends.

Mr. Ahenkorah explained that he selected Tema Polyclinic as part of the beneficiary institutions for the equipments, because he was once rushed there for treatment during his elementary school days.

He charged the authorities of the hospital to maintain the equipments in good condition.

He also underscored the need for the equipments to be put to good use to ensure efficient healthcare delivering in the constituency.

On her part, the Administrator of the hospital Madam Josephine Boateng, who was amazed about the quantum of the equipments, said they could not have come at a better time than this.

“Although Individuals and corporate bodies come here and present donations to us, to be honest with you; we have not seen this before. The truth has to be told,” she said.

She noted that since the elevation of the hospital which was formerly called Urban Health Centre to the status of a polyclinic in 1962, there hasn’t been any additional equipment to ease the increasing pressure on the hospital.

This, she explained, had put the hospital in a dire and difficult situation.

She said their dream is that the hospital will be elevated to the status of a district hospital and urged Mr. Ahenkorah to ensure that that dream is realized if he elected as the Member of Parliament.

She commended Mr. Ahenkorah for the gesture and promised to maintain the equipments in good condition.

From Tema Polyclinic, the NPP parliamentary candidate and his entourage went to the Tema General Hospital and also made a similar donation to the hospital, which is located in Tema Central Constituency.

The Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Opoku Adusei, who received the items on behalf of the hospital, revealed that most of the buildings in the hospital had developed cracks because they have become too old.

“There are serious cracks all over the place. So if one day you come and you don’t find me it means the building has collapsed on me,” Dr Opoku Adusei conjectured.

He lamented that several uncompleted building projects are scattered all over the hospital which he said was making the whole hospital look disorganized and dirty.

He underscored the need for a modern hospital to be built in Tema, to take care of the increasing population in the Tema metropolis as well as patients from the surrounding towns who visit the hospital to seek medical care.

“I think that somebody must adopt this place as has been done at Ridge Hospital and other hospitals and build us a new hospital. We cannot continue to renovate this place because there is no money even to do the renovation. Probably, the money for renovation should be able to put up a new facility,” he suggested.

Dr. Opoku Adusei commended the NPP candidate for the gesture and promised to put the items to good use.
