We’ll respect Supreme Court order – EC

The Electoral Commission has said it will be able to produce the list of all persons who registered as voters ahead of the 2012 elections, using the National Health Insurance (NHIA) card as a form of identification.

This follows an order given on Thursday by the Supreme Court. The Court said it needed the information to enable it bring clarity on its May 5 judgment, regarding the removal of unqualified persons on the voters’ register to a closure.

Head of Communication at the Electoral Commission, Eric Kofi Dzakpasu, who gave the assurance, said the Commission respects the orders of the court.

“The Electoral Commission respects the ruling of the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court gave us two clear and unequivocal orders — that we should produce the list of those who registered with the NHIS card and then submit a written statement on steps and modalities by which we are going to delete the names of the people and give them the opportunity to re-register if they are so qualified, and we should meet this by June 29. This is exactly what we are going to do,” he said.

He was hopeful the commission will meet the deadline given by the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court on Thursday June 23, ordered the Electoral Commission to furnish it with the full list of persons who registered with the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) card as a form of identification, in six days.

They further ordered that the Electoral Commission to provide them with a detailed plan on how they were going to carry out the deletion and re-registration of the people, who registered with the NHIS cards.

The apex court made the order in a fresh case brought before it by former People’s National Convention (PNC) Youth Organizer, Abu Ramadan and Evan Nimako.
