The Vice Presidential candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party(NPP), Dr Mahumudu Bawumia, has assured residents of Tema that his party led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will embark on major economic policies to revamp Tema and make it a first class industrial hub, if it is given the opportunity to form the next government in 2017.
Dr. Bawumia noted that business activities in Tema which had been the backbone of Ghana’s economy since the regime of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP) under the first President of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah are dying gradually because of several taxes slapped on businesses by NDC administration led by President John Dramani Mahama.
According to him, Tema is the heart beat of Ghana’s economy and therefore NPP government will do everything possible to ensure that it becomes economically viable.
Dr. Mahumudu Bawumia gave the assurance on Friday, June 3, 2016, when he paid a courtesy call on Tema Mantse Nii Adjei Kraku (II) at Tema Newtown as part of his two day tour of Tema East Constituency.
“Nana wants to really rebuild the economy of Ghana…so far we have seen that the economy is going backwards from our assessmemnt. The fishing industry is suffering. The workers are suffering. The traders are suffering. The business people are suffering .That is the reality of what is happening in Tema. And if Tema is suffering it means Ghana is suffering because Tema is the heart beat of the Ghanaian economy.”
“The port is very to economic growth, the fishing activities, the industries and the businesses are really key to Ghanaian economy,” he added.
As part of NPP’s government plans to revamp Tema, Dr Bawumia said will be in the area of refurbishing of the Tema Shipyard in order to generate more revenues and also create jobs for the youth.
According to him, the NPP government will build an economy which will provide jobs for the teeming youth who are suffering because of lack of jobs.
The former Governor of the Bank of Ghana lamented bitterly about what he calls excessive import duties on fishing items such as fishing net, outboard motor and premix fuel.
Dr. Bawumia pledged the commitment of NPP administration to restore the nursing and teacher trainee allowances which had been abolished by the NDC administration.
Touching on the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Dr Bawumia who accused the NDC administration of collapsing the scheme assured that NPP administration will revive the scheme so that Ghanaians can access good healthcare.
From the Tema Mantse’s palace Dr Bawumia who was led by the Member of Parliament for Tema East, Hon. Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover as well as Member of Tema Central Hon. Kofi Brako and NPP Parliamentary Candidate for Tema West Kingsley Carlos Ahenkora visited the Aboboso market at Tema Newtown to interact with the traders.
They proceeded to the Tema Fishing harbour where they also interacted with the fisher folks.
