The Presidential candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo Addo, has promised to reduce electricity tariffs if he is elected as President during the November 7 polls.

Nana Addo has lamented the impact of the current tariffs which he said are exorbitant and beyond the ordinary Ghanaian, adding that he will reduce the electricity tariffs if he triumphs in the general elections.

Speaking at a meeting in Accra before departing for France, Nana Addo said, “I think it is important for there to be clarity on this matter. If the government cannot or will not listen to the calls for the reduction of electricity tariffs, it is important for the people of Ghana to know that, God-willing, if I win the elections of this year, I definitely will. I will definitely reduce electricity tariffs.”

Nana Addo’s comments come days after the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) asked the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to suspend the implementation of their new billing software.

Speaking in response to the PURC’s, directive to the ECG, Nana Addo insisted that more should be done to alleviate the pressure brought on by the new tariffs.

It is in this light that he stressed the need for an immediate reduction of the electricity tariffs by government.
