We won’t entertain tribal politics – Volta Chiefs to politicians

The chiefs of South and Central Tongu Constituencies in the Volta Region have descended heavily on politicians who use tribal politics to solicit votes in the area, warning that such undesirable tendencies will no longer be tolerated.

Speaking on behalf of the Chiefs of Central and South Tongu Constituencies, Togbe Atatim IV of Mafi Traditional Area, warned that they will not entertain such negative politics that have the tendency of plunging the country into chaos.

“We the chiefs would like to unequivocally and unreservedly state that the 2016 parliamentary and presidential elections should be devoid of election characterized by tribalism and actions by dishonest politicians geared towards luring people to vote for them,” Togbe Atatim IV reiterated when the 2016 NPP flagbearer paid a courtesy call on the Chiefs as part of his four-day campaign tour of the Volta Region.

He added that as custodians and representatives of the of their people, “the Chiefs have come to the realization that in any civilized and matured society where democratic institutions and principles are respected, hardcore tribalistic tendencies and structures are frowned upon, considered conservative and thrown into oblivion.”

Some political opponents of the NPP have characterized the party as anti-Volta Region/Ewes and this has affected the political fortunes of the main opposition party over the years.

But the Volta Chiefs say Ghana is of age and the citizenry must realize that true democracy should be devoid of tribal politics, which is endemic in some districts and regions in Ghana.

“We the chiefs of Central and South disassociate ourselves from politics which is not based on national issues, geared towards national development. A town or constituency should be considered a stronghold of a political party, that description should be based on judgment and perceptions on policies and issues put forward by the political party towards national development,” Togbe Atatim IV stated.

To this effect, he said parties’ strongholds should not be characterized by tribalism and opportunism, which are negative features that can throw the nation into chaos.

Togbe Atatim IV applauded the erstwhile NPP administration led by President Agyekum Kufuor for bringing a lot of development projects to the South and Central Tongu Constituencies.

These, according to him, include the upgrading of infrastructural projects at the Adidome Senior High School, making the school one of the model and elite schools in Ghana.

“The NPP government started the construction of the Sogakope-Adidome-Ho-Home road,” which is now being continued by the Mahama administration after being abandoned for some time.”
