The Brong Ahafo Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Christopher Tawiah who disclosed this said the clashes ensued after one faction defied the advice of the Regional Security Council to install a sub chief in the area.
“Police have information that the queenmother, Nana Afia Ababio wanted to install a chief against the advice of the Municipal Council and while she was in the process of doing that, the opposing side, started shooting and later attacked the palace.
“Eventually three people namely Edmund Opoku Appiah; 34 years, Hamza Mohammed; 39 years and Yaw Dennis Kyere; 18 years, all sustained gunshots and were rushed to Berekum Family hospital, where Edmund Opoku Appiah died on arrival. Hamza Mohammed has also been referred to Komfo Anokye Hospital due to the seriousness of the injury. Dennis Yaw Okyere is on admission at the Holy Family hospital,” ASP Tawiah said.
He further stated that police personnel have been deployed to ensure that calm returns in the area.
“The Police have managed to intensify patrol and the area is now calm and we are maintaining law and order.”
Apart from the Brong Ahafo region, other regions including the Volta and Northern regions have recorded a number of cheiftaincy clashes that have led to the death of some residents.
Conflicts in these towns have compelled the Ministry of Interior to on several occasions impose a curfew on these towns to resolve the problem but the challenge persists.
