The Ghana chapter of the pro-opposition group, Coalition to Elect Nana Akufo-Addo and Dr. Bawumia (CENAB) has declared its intention to mobilize Ghanaians to hit the streets to demonstrate against the Electoral Commission (EC) for refusing to comply with the directives of the Supreme Court to clean the voters register.
The Chairman of CENAB, Kweku Osei Bonsu, who disclosed this to Oman FM, expressed their displeasure over what he described as adamant posture of the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Madam Charlotte Osei.
“We’re not happy about the way EC is treating the Supreme Court directives in the case of Abu Ramadan and Evans Nimako vs. Attorney General,” Mr. Osei Bonsu indicated.
Asked how soon they intend to demonstrate against EC, Mr. Osei Bonsu said, “We are waiting for few days because we have heard Abu Ramadan has indicated that he will be filing a contempt suit against EC so once we know the outcome of the court we will then determine our line of action.”
According to him, steps being taken by the EC Chairperson Madam Charlotte Osei so far have made them to believe that she wants to throw the country into the chaos but warned that they will do everything possible to resist her from achieving her target.
“This woman is bent on throwing our beautiful country into chaos during this year’s election, but we’re not going to sit down and allow her to carry out this diabolical agenda,” he stated.
A former National Youth Organiser of the People’s National Convention (PNC) and one Evans Nimako sued the Electoral Commission (EC) at the Supreme Court over the credibility of the current voters register
The Supreme Court on Thursday, May 5, 2016 unanimously ordered the Electoral Commission (EC) to expunge over 600,000 names of dead persons from the current voters register.
The court also ordered the EC to delete the names of over 4million people who registered with the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) card and give them the opportunity to register again using appropriate identification.
But EC in a response last Thursday, May 19, 2016 explained that the Supreme Court did not instruct them to delete the names of those who registered ahead of the 2012 elections with the National Health Insurance Scheme card as a proof of identity.
“For persons who registered with NHIA cards, such registrations were lawful at the time of registration, and the subsequent declaration of unconstitutionality in the earlier Abu Ramadan case, does not automatically render them void’, the statement from the EC read.
However, Mr. Kweku Osei Bonsu described the action of EC as gross disrespect to the country’s Apex court.
“What EC is doing is completely unacceptable. How on earth do you disregard the orders of the highest court of the land,” he charged.
He accused the Electoral Commission of being in bed with the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to right rig the general elections in favour of President Mahama.
Explaining why he thinks EC is in bed with NDC, Mr. Osei Bonsu, noted that anytime the New Patriotic Party (NPP) raises issues with the current voters register and as well as complains about the posture of Madam Charlotte Osei, the NDC executives will quickly jump to their defense as if they are spokespersons for EC.
